Dr Laura Flaherty

Dr Flaherty has over 20 years of experience in psychiatry. She began her career in the NHS as a junior doctor in 1998 and progressed to become a consultant child and adolescent psychiatrist. She has specialised in child and adolescent psychiatry for 15 years and has held her current consultant position for the past seven years.

Having trained at Liverpool University, Dr Flaherty initially explored a career in general practice but soon discovered her passion for psychiatry, particularly in engaging with young people and their families.

Her work and experience cover all aspects of children’s mental health, including specific conditions such as ADHD, autism, anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, Tourette's syndrome, trauma disorders, and self-harm.

Dr Flaherty provides a supportive space, offering acceptance, warmth and care. Her approach welcomes each child or young person into therapy with the belief that the space offers a safe and confidential way to explore their desire for change. She strives to understand their difficulties within the context of their relationships and circumstances, and aims to empower them by involving them in their treatment journey, supported by their family and broader network.

Dr Flaherty employs a holistic and personalised approach and believes in the importance of addressing issues early to prevent more complex challenges later on.
